M U L L A duel of ideas

Recovery of small detail

Marcel Proust  vs  Karl Ove Knausgård

Proust spent thousands of pages finding the texture of a memory inside a small cake. Knausgård wrote six volumes about cleaning a bathroom and missing his father. Both refused the modern compression of life into highlights — both insisted that the small detail, attended to, is where the real proportions are kept.

Recover, in two paragraphs, a detail from yesterday that you had already begun to forget. Don't make it mean anything.

Whose side are you on?
