Self-reliance vs. local knowledge

Ralph Waldo Emerson  vs  Wendell Berry

Emerson built a philosophy of the self-trusting individual, refusing inherited custom. Berry, a hundred years later, replied that self-reliance without local knowledge is a kind of arrogance — that the individual is real but the place is older. Both are right; both are insufficient.
