Saul Bellow vs George Saunders
Bellow wrote Herzog as a man writing letters to everyone living and dead, trying to think his way through a marriage and a century. Saunders writes from the same drowning, but kinder, with cleaner stakes. Both put their characters in the noise of the city — physical, mental, moral — and ask what the soul is doing in there.
